Schools with Grass Fields Move to Stadiums with Field Turf

Here are the list of schools and the new sites of the games that will be held Friday night at 7:30PM:

Class AA
Aliquippa vs. Steel Valley at Moon
Burrell vs. Mt. Pleasant at Valley
Jeannette vs. South Allegheny at Norwin
Freeport vs. Beaver Falls at Highlands
Washington vs. Shady Side Academy at Wash/Jeff’s Cameron Stadium

Class A
Clairton vs. Frazier at Belle Vernon
Springdale vs. Brentwood at Fox Chapel
Jefferson-Morgan vs. Neshannock at Waynesburg High School
Monessen vs. Apollo-Ridge at Charleroi
Sto-Rox vs. Carmichaels at North Hills
Bethlehem-Center vs. Union at California High School
Rochester vs. Avonworth at Ambridge

Note: Seton LaSelle vs Greensburg Central Catholic was already being played at Chartiers Valley HS in Kirwin Heights.

I have a huge problem with pretty much forcing schools to move from grass surfaces to field turf surfaces. These 12 schools worked hard all season to earn the right to play in front of their home crowds. And the WPIAL took that away from them. If the individual AD’s, Coach’s, and School Boards got together and said our fields aren’t in great shape, would you want a neutral field, that would be totally different. If these 12 schools didn’t find a site by 12 Noon tomorrow, the WPIAL would’ve found a site for them with no guarantee that the game would’ve been close to those schools. Could you picture Clairton vs Frazier at Canon-Mac while Monessen vs Apollo Ridge at Keystone Oaks( for example).

This is just the WPIAL throwing out its weight and showing how hypocritical it really is. They’re only in it for the money and not the safety of the kids. If they was in it for the safety of the kids, then why are 4 Championship Games played on the worst surface than about half the teams in those games played on all season at Heinz Field. This is yet another disingenuous move by the WPIAL.

And lets be for real, instead of just punishing schools schools for having grass fields. The WPIAL should’ve been a little more fair about this and moved all games regardless of what kind of playing surface they own.

It is what it is I guess, but really not that cool.

  1. The WPIAL is run by a bunch of old, grumpy and out of touch men. At the meeting the other night is was all about them. Much like some officials in the PIAA. it’s shame. Clairton deserves one more game at home. The rest will be on the road obviously.

Great BLOG by the way. I’ll definitely visit.
